Cropping and preview warnings

Instagram crops images differently across surfaces. Plan the layout before exporting.

  • Profile grid crops everything to 1:1. A 4:5 portrait post is cropped top-and-bottom in the profile thumbnail. Keep the focal element centered.
  • Story safe area is 1080 x 1420. The top 250 px and bottom 250 px are covered by the username and the action bar. Place text inside the central safe area.
  • Reel cover crops to 1:1 in the profile grid. Plan the cover so that the central 1080 x 1080 square has the title and face.
  • Carousel ratio is locked across slides. Mixing 4:5 with 1:1 within the same carousel is not supported. Pick one ratio for the whole carousel.
  • JPEG compression is aggressive. Heavy gradients and red text often show banding after upload. Export at 100% quality and let Instagram re-compress.

Source and calculation method

Where these sizes come from and how often SizeKit re-verifies.

Source type
Practical working size
Instagram does not publish an exact spec sheet for all surfaces. Values are based on Meta Business Help, the Creator portal, and observed platform crop behavior.
Calculation method
Direct platform observation
For each surface, SizeKit picks the highest fidelity export that Instagram does not down-scale. Larger uploads are re-compressed.

FAQ

Quick answers for this asset.

What is the size of an Instagram post?

The current Instagram default is 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait). Square posts are 1080 x 1080 (1:1). Landscape posts are 1080 x 566 (1.91:1).

What is the size of an Instagram Story or Reel?

1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16). The central safe area is 1080 x 1420; the top and bottom 250 px are covered by username and action bar.

What is the size of an Instagram profile picture?

Upload at 640 x 640 or higher (1:1 square). Display is cropped to a circle. Minimum accepted is 320 x 320.

Why does my Instagram image look cropped?

The profile grid crops all posts to 1:1. A 4:5 portrait post is cropped top-and-bottom in the thumbnail. Keep the focal element centered.

Can I use different ratios in a carousel?

No. Instagram locks the aspect ratio across all carousel slides. Pick one ratio (usually 4:5 or 1:1) for the entire carousel.
